The Pluto December update

Hello there,

With the end of the year closing in, we wanted to share our final update of what's been a busy year. In a nutshell, our highlights have to be: our crowdfunding campaign, covering our 1000th customer, launching our mobile app, and growing the Pluto family. Lot's more on all this below.

The Pluto app is now live for all

You may not have asked for an insurance app for Christmas, but you got one.  The Pluto iOS app is now out of beta and available for all new and existing customers. If you haven't downloaded it yet, what are you waiting for?! Using the app, you can easily access your cover offline, submit claims, and get human help.

People are saying all kinds of nice things, and someone was even kind enough to leave us a 2* review. Don't forget to leave us a rating and review if you haven't already!

Last but certainly not least, very shortly we'll be launching our partnership with Babylon Health. This will allow all Pluto customers to speak to a UK GP from all over the world, from their smartphone. In the words of Babylon "talk to a doctor within minutes, 24/7", all from the comfort of your hotel room, all you need is Wi-Fi. Customers will receive more details on how to use this in the next few days.

Helping combat the bad bits about travelling

As most of our customers hopefully know, when you buy a Pluto policy, we donate £1 from our income, to the Travel Foundation.

Why do we do this? We do it because it just feels like the right thing to do. Travelling is amazing, but it has consequences. On the wider environment yes, but also on local environments and the unique cultures that make them special. We chose to support the Travel Foundation because their aim is to reduce the negative impacts of tourism and help locals sustainably benefit from it.

Here are a couple of examples of the work the Travel Foundation has been doing this year.

  • Helping 150 small businesses across Jamaica access training and marketing support to improve their business and better understand international visitors' expectations and requirements.
  • Helping to improve resource efficiency by reducing waste, water and energy use in hotels and giving training and expert guidance to improve the excursions sector, in Cape Verde, Africa.

The Pluto family just got bigger

We couldn't be more excited to tell you that the Pluto team in our London office is growing by 3. As part of the crowdfund, we talked about how we wanted to expand the team to build out our vision and grow the company, this means hiring amazing people. Which is exactly what we did. We've hired:

  • A growth marketer to help us grow our customer base
  • A software engineer to build more amazing tech
  • A designer to help us define and bring to life future products

Next year they'll introduce themselves properly on this newsletter and you can see what makes them tick and why they wanted to join Pluto.

Congrats on getting this far. And if you're taking time off to relax or travel over the next month, we hope you have an amazing break. Join us next year for our 2019 transparency report.
